Honing Services
After a certain amount of time, any straight razor will begin to lose its edge and need to be rehoned. This can be anywhere between three months to over a year, and this timeframe depends on many things.
New users tend to have less than ideal stropping abilities, which can lead to more frequent honing needs. The quality of the metal in the blade also makes a big difference.
If you have a razor that you've been shaving with and it's losing its ability to give a close and comfortable shave, it probably needs a touch-up. This usually begins on a 5k or 8k stone and finishes on a 12k polishing stone. The usual charge for a touch-up and polishing is $25.
If it's a razor that has been abused, neglected, or is an attic or antique shop find, it will likely require a bit more work. These razors usually need to have the bevel set on a 1k stone, then go through a progression of 3k, 5k, 8k, finishing up with a final polishing on a 12k stone. This level of honing usually runs about $50 but could be more depending on the blade.
